If you answered “YES” to any of the above, then it is a big possibility that you’re undergoing Andropause or “Male Menopause.”

What is Andropause? Andropause is the period in a man’s life when his hormones start to decline leading to various signs and symptoms. Although considered a taboo subject several years ago, the condition and it’s treatment is now being recommended as part of an overall wellness program.

Testosterone is the primary male hormone. It is often used generically to encompass different synthetic derivatives, as well as natural bioidentical testosterone. There is much confusion in the literature about the benefits and risks of hormone replacement therapy. One thing that needs to be considered is the actual form of testosterone used in these studies. Natural bioidentical testosterone must not be confused with the synthetic derivatives or anabolic steroids, which in certain cases, if not monitored properly could cause problems such as pathologic fractures, liver problems, cancer and even heart disease.

A man’s testosterone usually starts to decline at the age of 40 at a rate of 1% a year. Recent studies have shown that about 5% on men between 40-50 and 70% of men over 70 years are hypogonadal. One interesting point to note is that we are seeing younger men in their 20’s having hypogonadal levels. The reason for this includes poor nutrition as well as environmental causes such as xenoestrogens.

How can you find out if your levels are low? Testing either through the blood or saliva could yield valuable results. Besides total and free testosterone levels, you want to make sure that your DHT, estradiol, DHEA-SO4, pregnenolone and prolactin levels are tested as a baseline. Remember, it’s all about balance when it comes to hormonal health.
